One English Language in Two Billion Flavours: Which is Yours? The aim of the English Project is to promote awareness and understanding of the unfolding global story of the English language in all its varieties – past, present and future. Our style is designed to be intelligent, entertaining, inclusive and interactive way so as to enrich people’s lives and enable them to make more of the exceptional cultural and communications phenomenon which is English. We intend to reach a broadly-based audience, globally, socially, ethnically and by age amongst English’s two billion speakers worldwide (that's as a first or second language). The English Project will develop a programme of activities and projects which will be funded through sales, commercial sponsorship, by charging fees and by government and public support. These will evolve over time and as opportunity presents. It will operate through a variety of media – including exhibitions (permanent, temporary and travelling), books, websites, broadcasting, discussions, debates, surveys and educational initiatives. It is intended that its long term flagship project should be a visitor attraction (in Winchester, Hampshire U.K) whose format can be replicated and customised globally. It will stimulate economic development in the cultural and creative industries. The English Project will draw on a research community/observatory for its source material (some of which will be specially commissioned) and will manage a production house which will commission a wide range of experts (in terms of subject matter, creative and technical skills) for project delivery. It will also co-operate with partners who bring particular resources or have special routes to an audience (although it is important that these should not compromise the Project’s core values). The success of the English Project will be measured primarily by the level and quality of ‘participation’ (i.e. attendance, purchase, taking part) in its activities and the calibre of its products. |
